'We have chosen hope over fear'

I kept Kira and Kiyomi home from school today to watch the inauguration, and I'm so glad I did. I wanted them to see this historical event uninterrupted by reading assignments, or passing period bells, or flying spitballs. Rigel went into work a little late, and the four of us sat together and witnessed Barack Obama being sworn in as our 44th president.

Aside for some whoops and cheers for Obama and Kiyomi's hissing when Bush appeared, the girls sat quietly and listened to every word. I think they knew the importance and weight of what they were seeing.

I'll never forget this day, or what it means to our country and to our children. It might not sink in until after the Inaugural Ball is over and I actually see Obama sitting in the Oval Office, but I'm starting to believe it might not all be a dream.

. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .

What are you doing today?

  1. We watched in our office conference room here on east coast, loved every minute (except when they showed GWB - oh, except for when Bushes got on helicopter and finally left!! we all wanted to make sure that really happened, haha)

And yes, many teary eyes and lots of applauding. Riveted to the screen. Glad your girls enjoyed.

  2. I watched starting early in the morning (and God, those CNN talking heads are irritating)...We had our daughter come in to watch the swearing-in, and then she went to play while we watched the speech, cheering and (me)crying. I knew there was no way I could work today. I had to stay home and see this.

  3. We watched all day. We kept the boys home and forced them to sit still and watch it. They'll thank me someday.

  4. The actual inauguration was at 5pm our time so we all sat and watched it together. My son is only 7 and it is a huge concept for him to get but we've been talking a lot recently about why Mummy and Daddy didn't like that George W. Bush was the President and he got a lot of it.

I was whooping and shouting at the TV so much that my 20 month old daughter has been walking around shouting 'BAMA! 'BAMA! all day. It's such a positive period and I can only hope he lives up to his hype and that you lot Stateside have got the leader you need and deserve :)

  5. I wished I had stayed home. Instead, I tried to watch via the internet at work. BIG. MISTAKE. It's hard to have a good cry when the inauguration ceremony keeps stopping and freezing Obama's face with his eyes closed, then starting again ten seconds and AT LEAST five profound sentences later. ARGH.

But, yeah, I think it's real!! He is MR. PRESIDENT!!!!

  6. I was there! Did my parents tell you?

Most amazing weekend of my life. I'm still walking on air.

  7. Yes, we watched, the kids circling and dancing, I think they felt my excitement and hope. Sarah is 4, but she already says "Bawack Oboma" and knows who he is!!

  8. My only regret is that I wasn't with my kids. I know Sage was too little but if Thalia hadn't just missed a whole week of school for the damn ear infection, I'd have pulled her out. What an incredible memory your girls will always have. And how lucky we all are to have our kids grow up during the Obama years.

  9. I literally did nothing productive that day except for watching the inauguration on tv. Somehow, my daughter did not seem to complain that we did not watch her favorite channels.
