Wouldn't It Be Nice?

I don't know about you, but I was incredibly moved by Barack Obama's acceptance speech last night at the DNC. We made the girls watch this historic event and they actually made it through half of it before Kiyomi was lured away by a rerun of iCarly and Kira had to get back to the computer to return the three-hundred IMs that had accumulated in those few minutes.

Rigel and I were so deflated after Kerry's defeat in the last election (I remember swearing that I was moving to Europe) that it's hard to get our hopes up for this one, but I can't help but feel like there really is a huge change about to take place. Wouldn't it be nice?

(For those of you that missed it, you can watch the speech in its entirety here. More rewarding than those repeats of Judge Judy, I promise.)

. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .

  2. Yes, it was amazing. Michele Obama's speech was awe-inspiring as well. (Even Hillary Clinton gave a good speech! I thought her speech in support of Obama was better than any she gave on her own behalf.)

Man, I'm invested in this election. I always am, but after eight years of watching the Bush admin disassemble our democracy... all the while believing he never really won an election.

I am jaded, but I still have hope.

  3. They are such a beautiful family. I don't think anyone on either side of the aisle can argue that point.

Anything's better than Judge Judy reruns though.

  4. Admittedly as a Scot I'm not as heavily invested in the result as you lot Stateside are, but I have been hoping and praying that Obama is successful. Palin terrifies me.

  5. yeah, it was wonderful. I've heard Michelle speak to a smaller crowd during primary season, and she's fantastic. I'm keeping all my appendages crossed.

(Although I have to say that, for sheer charisma, there aren't many speakers who can compete with Bill Clinton--whether you like him personally or not.)

  6. He's good, but he's not Palin.

  7. Well just from my blog name you know where I stand (although I seldom blog about anything political). I felt the same way after his speech - very moved. A friend of mine just registered to vote for the first time in his life because he was so moved by Obama's speech and he's 39. I just hope he will truly make some changes if he's elected. The tough thing is that it's not just up to him - Congress has their say, too. I am completely disillusioned about our political system and am always shocked when anything positive happens here in DC.

Obama seems like he is ready to take on the challenges that face him though, and I really really hope he is successful.

  8. I'm worried, but excited. Worried because I now live in Ohio and... these people scare the hell out of me.

    But I have faith.

  9. Very hopeful here in Seattle!

I, like you, wanted to move to Europe after the last election.

  10. oh, yes, it would be soooo nice. i too shared your sorrow after the 2004 election, and threatened to move to denmark. but my father reminded me that anyone who really loves this country will stay here and fight for what we believe in. and in the meantime hope and hope and hope!

  11. Being interracial and having interracial children, race does matter to me in this election. I tear up thinking of a black family in the White House. What an amazing statement to this country's children and to the world. But, my husband fought in Iraq, lost dozens of comrades, and we are really worried about our country's apathy towards getting off foreign oil.

I can't picture Obama making decisions about war, I would be much more at ease if he had served in the military and understood our culture and notion of sacrifice for our country (not that he doesn't have this but it is quite distinct in the military). On the other hand McCain I can see as CIN, but not as much concern for social issues that I care about. It's gonna be interesting...
