Pa Rum Pum Pum Pum.

In consideration of our sanity and that of our neighbors', we decided against getting Kiyomi a drum set and instead got her one of these, a digital drum machine:
She was pretty excited, and couldn't wait to get started. After the four hours it took to open the box and then search the house for six C batteries, she finally got down to business and started banging away. After her first solo she dramatically thrust her sticks in the air above her head, got up and took a deep bow. Then in an added bit of realism she pretended to be drunk, staggering around the room with her eyes half closed and bumping into furniture, JUST LIKE A REAL MUSICIAN.

We're so proud.

HAPPY HOLIDAYS! I'm wishing all of you good things for the coming year - joy, health, happiness and the company of those you love.

  1. Wise move on the drum set! That mistake was made here 2 years ago and I have never been the same.

  2. Wow! What a cool, technologically intriguing gift! If I were inclined to play the drums, I would likely much prefer this to an old school drum set. She will be the envy of her sister and all her friends ... and really, isn't that what childhood is all about - winning the competition for who has the coolest stuff? (Just kidding. If memory serves, it's about a whole lot more in-depth stuff than that.)

    Happy Holidays, sweatpantsmom!

  3. Someone got our son a drum set and I think it might make my wife go insane. I, actually, want to try and play with it, too, but have restrained myself somehow. But next time I'm home and they're not around...

    HOpe your Christmas was great.

  5. My parents bought my brother a drum set when he was ten, and the noise drove us all insane. It mysteriously disappeared two weeks after he got it, only to be found six months later, AFTER my brother had completed his drum lessons...

  6. I wanted to play drums as a kid and was really bummed out that the band leader made me play clarinet instead (plus he would use my clarinet to demonstrate to the band and he had the WORST breath ever- blech.) I think I may have to go get myself one of these.

    Happy Holidays!

  12. My nephew got a drum kit. As he is only 3 his technique could use some work. Also he heeds to learn how to use a spade in order to dig it up from where his uncle has buried the damn thing.

  13. You're really brave giving your kids noisy instruments as presents. Bu then again, you don't strike me as a normal boring parent (that's a compliment)

  18. Oh hilarious. Now I know what to get Nate next year. If only they made something like that that kept the football games on tv silent too.

Very happy holidays to the whole sweatpants clan. xo

  24. AND she's an actress too!! I hope you have some earplugs on hand.

Happy New Year to you Marsha!! According to my MIL, this is the best year for a pig. Supposedly, the last time this pig came around was 600 years ago. Not sure what that meant but I'm on that bandwagon as long as we'll have a healthy baby this coming June.

  28. Nice. Glad to see she knows what it takes to be a "real musician". My three year old got a Barbie Guitar so she's pretty much on her way as well.

  30. Rock and roll! The world needs more girl drummers, especially ones with as much imagination and sense of drama as Kiyomi clearly has.

Our boy turns four today and he's getting a brand new real-live snare drum (to replace the cheap one he drummed into oblivion within three months of our getting him his kiddie drum kit). Hopefully they'll be many broken drum heads in Kiyomi's future.

  31. Oh, my 3yo son needs one of those! Hubby wouldn't let me get him a drum set this year, but he drums on everything, even does vocal percussion if he doesn't have something ot drum with. Well, maybe next year.

  32. We got bunny a drum kit last year for Christmas. The Bean was only 4 months old then. Since she's been in a walker chair she would scoot over to it and pound away. Now, she's sixteen months, and I swear, she's playing complex beats. It's incredible. Bunny, however, tells me that it's too loud and it hurts her ears. I agree.

  33. Flicking my Bic and holding it towards the drum set. HOpe you're having a fun hol!

  36. Well, at least she didn't bust up the joint or throw a telephone at anyone.

Hope that you had a Happy Holiday as well!

p.s. Does she have any groupies yet?

  38. I found you when I searched for PA RUM PUM PUM PUM and I'd sure appreciate your advice on lots of things since I really don't know to do a blog even though I am trying. What I loved were all the comments. How do you manage to get so many comments? People certainly must be looking at your blog often for that to happen.
