My Breakfast With Hayden Panettiere Turned Me Into A Sci-Fi Fan.

Okay, we didn't actually eat together. But I did do a phone interview with the Heroes star the other morning for an upcoming issue of Genlux magazine, and at least one of us was eating breakfast. Never mind that it was just me sucking down a mug of coffee and gnawing on a piece of rock-hard toast. And the fact that we weren't in the same room - just a technicality! And as I asked her questions about Dolce & Gabbana, beauty routines and high heels, I couldn't help but think that it was a good thing she wasn't there to see me with my unbrushed teeth, tangled hair and that lovely toothpaste stain smeared down the front of my sweatshirt.

I don't want to give away too much of the article here, but I can confess that when I got the call to do the interview I'd never watched a single episode of Heroes. I've written before about my inability to watch movies where the actors are wearing period costumes, but I also don't care for anything that requires me to suspend belief - horses that talk, starships named Enterprise, Robin Williams as a doctor - it's all out of the realm of possibility and I can't watch it. But Julia Roberts as a hooker, now THAT'S a movie.

I thought I should know a little bit about the show before I interviewed Ms. Panettiere, though, so I went over to the Heroes website where I was happy to see past episodes available for online viewing. Is this the greatest invention or what? I keep thinking that if only this was around when I was younger I would maybe have gone out and found a boyfriend instead of staying home just to watch all those Three's Company marathons.

I thought I'd skim through the first episode and then be able to come up with a few topics for my interview, questions that wouldn't give away the fact that I hadn't been following the show. Generic things like, "So, how does it feel to be a young woman on a prime time hit series?" or something to show my tech savvy like, "Is your makeup applied any differently for HighDef?" And I would pronounce it just like that - Haidef, since "High Definition" sounds just so nerdy and out of the loop.

But something strange happened. I loved the show. I was absolutely riveted by the indestructible cheerleader and the politician's brother who thought he could fly. I felt the pain of the artist who felt his future was doomed, since I feel that on a daily basis. And the Japanese dude with the teleporting powers? My new role model.

When the last scene was over I couldn't wait to the spend the next few hours catching up on my new favorite show. I made myself a double cappuccino, put a gallon of Mountain Dew and some pork rinds in front of the girls and told Rigel not to expect dinner. Then I clicked over to the Watch Heroes link to start streaming Episode 2, the one where I would find out if the politician's brother could actually fly. Would I feel elation as he soared over the buildings or horror when I saw a bloody, body-shaped splotch on the sidewalk? Either way, I was psyched!

And then, to my surprise, I realized there was no Episode 2 online. In fact, Episodes 2-15 seemed to be conspicuously missing. WTF?! I clicked furiously around the entire site to see if they were hiding somewhere else but found nothing. I cursed loudly and then Googled "Heroes Episode 2" but could only find links to previews, lame recaps and one clever website where they'd replaced the 'o' in Heroes with a 'p.' Next I said a little prayer and put in a call to Blockbuster where the incredibly helpful clerk told me he wasn't seeing it on the computer, but hey, wait - they did have Hogan's Heroes hahaha. Thanks, now go back to cleaning your crack pipe.

So now I'm forced to wait until the Season One DVD is released and it's killing me. It's like having an itch that you can't scratch, or watching the person in front of you buy the very last Rice Krispy square at Starbucks. Well, maybe not as bad as that.

Where's a good teleporter when you need him?

  3. I'm so sorry. I should have told you it was amazing, back when we were discussing our famous garbage disposals being on the show.

As a person who gets a little weak in the knees whenever she sees the words "Full Episodes Available Online" (and I don't know what you're talking about - if this had been available when I was a teenager, I never would have left the house to get a boyfriend) I can tell you that NBC is one of the worst about making their shows available and accessible.

Heroes is well worth the wait, though. It's gotten better every episode. But you probably shouldn't take my word for it - when I was a kid Mr. Spock and Captain Kirk were my invisible friends, and I would probably leave my husband if the right Doctor Who came along. :P

  4. There are so many days when I need a teleporter.

  5. SPM, I remember that post very well. That was when you became one of my favourite people because I am EXACTLY the same.

    ;)

  6. If you miss the first-runs, they re-run it on the SciFi Channel later the same week. I know that doesn't help if you want to watch the back epis, but on the occasions when my Tivo has crapped out right before an installment, at least I know I don't have to wait until mid-July to see it.

  7. I HEART HEROES. That is all.

  8. Last week I was unable to get to a television at 9am (THE HORROR!), so I instructed my boyfriend to Tivo 24, since Heroes is supposedly available online. Then when I went to watch it, every time I clicked on the link, it played the previous episode instead. I went into a panic, and finally figured out that it aired on SciFi again last night. I really hope I remembered to set the Tivo for that, otherwise I might be tempted to jump off a building myself.

  9. Hi SPM :) I've actually been reading your blogs from work and am completely addicted. But anyway, after reading this blog, I decided to check the show out, since I've heard great reviews about it. And now I am hooked. I am pleased to tell you that I found the other episodes!!! Just search on You Tube for Heroes Episode 2, etc. It comes in 5 parts. I'm on episode 4 now. WHAT HAVE YOU DONE TO ME?!? :P

  10. I love Hayden Panettiere! I used to watch her on "Guiding Light" when she played Lizzie, and then she got Leukemia, and...*sniff* It was obvious that she was going to succeed as an actress. Congrats on the interview!

My husband and I are ridiculously hooked on Heroes. We make our boys go to bed early on Monday nights so we don't miss any of it!

  11. I never miss Heroes. And damn - I wish I'd known about the 'Three's Company' marathons.

(Can't wait to see the article - let us know when the issue comes out.)

  12. Totally misleading title. At the very least you could have mentioned something about the interview/article as a tease instead of talking about coffee and trying to track down previous episodes.

  13. I haven't gotten into the whole Heroes thing. But I have to admit a fondness for the starship named Enterprise...

    Beam me up!

  14. go to ALLUC.org, they have at least up to ep 17 online.

  15. Hi there,
I am also a very huge Heroes fan which in my case is a bit difficult since I am in Germany and the series is not even out here yet. But... I get to watch em anyways... LOL
I suggest you read the spoilers or anything about the series until you are able to watch it. I find knowing what is going to happen is a real "spoiler" indeed. Oh and what is wrong with period costumes???

    ReplyDelete
  16. Well the bottom line is that story's pretty cool at least.

  17. My husband is addicted to the show, but it makes me all tense and full on anxiety. I have to leave the room when it's on or I will not be able to go to sleep.

Why yes, I'm a freak, how could you tell?

  18. Heroes is like crack, but better. So I hear. Um, not that I've ever tried crack or anything. Um...

Hey, isn't that Robin Williams pretending to be President of the United States??

  19. "Save the Cheerleader, Save the World", it's just so addicting isn't it? I didn't want to watch the first episode, but I was forced and now I can't imagine not seeing it. God, I hope it's picked up for season 2.

You can download them from iTunes if you're willing to pay for them.

  20. ihf: Thanks for the tip - Hopefully my daughter won't notice all that money missing from her iTunes account.

Victoria: The YouTube episodes aren't streaming properly for me for some reason - and cussing at the computer screen hasn't helped.

Mrs Chicky: Please don't scare me like that.

  21. I've never watched "Heroes" either and I can't decide if I've been missing anything or not. I'm too busy grieving over the fact that Gilmore Girls is being cancelled...even though the last season (without Amy Sherman Palladino) has been crap on a cracker.

  22. I'm too hung up on 'Lost' to get attached to another show. My older bro watches Heroes and loves it. I have a sneaking suspicion that one glimpse of Episode 1 and I'd be hooked as well.

    Save the cheerleader...

  23. What a coincidence! I just finished watching the latest episode. Decent show - a few too many Heroes for my taste, but... not too shabby.

  24. Never seen Heroes...
But I amalways late to the party... as I cannot standtelevision...
so, I always have to rent television series on dvd...
My latest was Arrested Development, And Weeds... But now, who knows Heroes... However, you did say you stayed home to watch a marathon of Three's Company...
    A marathon of Three's Company ????
    Marsha???
    How is that possible???

  25. My hubby LOVES that show too. I don't get to watch much tv being that he sits on the couch once he gets home and I'm the one wrangling the boy.

But it does look like a supercool show.

  26. I also found the immense joy that is finding the entire episode without commercials on the show's website, but for me it was 24. Our TiVo has grown retarded over the years and sometimes can't change the freaking channel right. And no commericals!

  27. I'm in love with the politician's brother. HOT!!!

  28. I love Three's Company!

  29. We love love Heroes, and even have it on our DVR. Can't wait to read your interview. I think she's a hottie. Nothing sexual here.

The whole cast is great except for the Jessica/Nikki characters. We're not a fan of that story line. Can't wait for the next 2 episodes.

  30. I didn't miss an episode - then they went on winter hiatus, I missed the first two and just haven't got around to catching up. Itunes it is.

If you can't wait, go to televisionwithoutpity.com and read the recaps. Not as fun but does the trick.

So...how was she? My friend edits her Disney videos. Dual lives.

  31. I LOVE Heroes. When I first heard about it I rolled my eyes a little bit and checked it out primarily to ridicule it later- but I was a full on junkie from episode 1.

Today I was talking about this weeks episode (I won't spoil anything for you). with a co worker and realized that the people around us who don't watch the show (FOOLS!) were looking at us like we were completely insane-" Claire can heal! Save the cheerleader, save the world!"

    ReplyDelete
  32. Dude. Allan and I can be on the phone discussing something like the wrongful arrest of his mother, but the second Heroses comes on, it's SO not important anymore. Life without a DVR really bites the big one.

    ReplyDelete
  33. I can't WAIT for this one on DVD. I wish Tivo worked hand in hand with hindsight ...

    ReplyDelete
  34. Honey!! Don't pay iTunes (much as I love 'em!) - go straight to nbc.com and click on Watch Episodes, then Heroes - ALL past episodes right there, for FREEBIE!! :-)

Great great show. And I SO love Hiro - he is a HERO :-D

  35. I love Heroes. Nthing the Itunes suggestion.

We have actually started recording it off the TV on our DVD recorder, but, unfortunately, we started sometime after the first 8-10 episodes; otherwise I would totally hook you up.

(Not to mention the fact that my husband accidentally missed recording the last five minutes of "Company Man," which was a crime against humanity. You'll know what I mean when you see it).

  36. If you're still looking for past Heroes episodes, the Sci-Fi network is doing a Heroes marathon this weekend, May 19.
