Cutest Wittle Kittie Video Ever!!! Sewiously!!!

Earlier this year when we were looking for a new kitten, my good friend Scott (hi Scott!) called me with a suggestion. He said I should get the girls a kitten he had seen, a new breed that have really short legs, and tiny ears. I didn't say anything to him then, but I remember thinking to myself that it would be just too sad to get the girls a pet that everyone feels sorry for. It would be like getting them a two-headed calf or a dog with only two front legs that has one of those teeny carts attached to its ass.

But then he sent me this video of that same breed the other day, and I have to admit that this is the cutest freakin' kitten I've ever seen in my life. Seriously. Usually when someone emails me an animal video I roll my eyes and press 'delete,' but I've watched this one around fifty times. Everytime it's over I cock my head to the side, say "awwwwww," clap my hands like a circus monkey and hit 'replay.' Rigel's starting to get annoyed, but then I pointed out that he does the very same thing every time he watches Bladerunner.

  1. My first thought was that it's shameful for humans to be creating messed up animals like this on purpose, but then when I watched the video I realized that this kitty is no different than a basset hound or a corgi with its shortened legs. It is because humans selectively bred for certain desired traits that there are so many different breeds of dogs, with each breed having a purpose (to hunt, to track, to run). The problem I have is when we selectively breed to the detriment of the animal's health. When we care more about an animal's appearance than maintaining a healthy body, that's when we've gone too far. I guess there's no real purpose to this cat's tiny ears and short legs, but from the video it looks like it moves around just as any other cat would, so there's probably no reason for me to be upset by it. Instead, I'll just sit here and enjoy it - because you are right, it's pretty damn cute!!!

  2. Yeah, kind of the feline equivalent of a dachshund!

But, I have to ask, since that other kitten appears in one scene w/"normal" length legs, is this one a mutant? or, there are others?

There are also other cat breeds that have cute fold-over ears like that.

  8. For those of you interested, this kitty is a breed called a munchkin. My mom's friend used to breed them, and they are so awesome. There are curly-coated munchkins as well that are known as "skookums".

    I just outed myself as a crazy cat lady, didn't I? :)

  9. Serious amounts of cute but I have to wonder how they get on jumping up onto counters and sofas, I can just see it trying over and over and humiliating itself.
    Poor cute short legged kitty.

  10. Okay, it's darn cute now. But what will it look like when it grows up? We need to see a pic of THAT.

  11. I can't believe I actually hit play! I too am an eye-roller when people send me videos (actually anything), but for some reason I watched it...too cute!!! A bit curious how this species of cat came about - but cute nevertheless!
