Why I Like Links.

The thing that I love about writing online is being able to use links. It's exciting to see those underlined or bolded words that lead you to other places. (Those weren't links, by the way. Pay attention.) Sometimes, by clicking on these links I feel like they can take me to exotic lands, like an adventure!

Everybody uses links in different ways. Some people use them to educate, some merely to entertain. You can even use them to make new friends! As you can see, I really love links!

They are often used, narcissistically, to refer back to one of your own old posts. Some use them subversively, which I would never do. Most importantly, I like to use them because they are a great way to say to the world, "I am creative!"

  1. What a wildly entertaining post! You had me going with a fantasy trip to an exotic land. I thought I'd click and be in the South Pacific....
And thanks for the great idea about a place to make new friends...prisoners, the untapped resource. I love it. Thanks for the laugh! :)

  2. Links are a true addiction. But way more fun.

  3. The Dutch Oven is in the mail. Definitely agree that a donkey would make good spouse. And is this your way of saying you didn't appreciate my link to the Snakes on a Plane sequels? (Oh yes I did just put a link in my comment to your post on links! I am such a badass!)

  4. Prisoners.com? You crack me up.

I've often thought of composing an entire post where each word would be a link. Like what would I link to if the word were "possum entrails" or something like that? It's fun to think about. :-)

  5. so spm, how many "hearty dishes (that) nourish the body and nurture the soul" have you cooked in your new dutch oven? and have you ever thought about becoming a copywriter for Le Creuset?

  6. Sometimes I go a bit overboard with them. I wonder who else does? ;)

  7. Hey, I like the updated look of your blogspace!

Oh, and the ode to links, of course.

  8. Prisoners.com? That is a great one, although I won't be spending much time there. Especially after I meet my new "Friend".

  9. HEY! I just got back from my vacation to this exotic land of which you link.
    kay, the donkey thing? woah.
    L-O-V-E that post!
I'm gonna send people from my blog to you again, if that's OK, you clever girl.

  10. I visit that exotic land often, but I never feel like I get to spend enough time there. My husband is always rushing me through the attractions I want to visit. It seems he only wants to take the trip for the low-priced food, the flashy electronic souvenirs, and the bulk-sized boxes of trash bags.

  11. that's just flippin' link-tastic, that is.

  12. just out of curiosity - are you drunk? were you? just asking.

(and no hatin' - I REFUSE to use the "wink" emoticonwhatever to inply sarcasm or "just kiddin around")

But serious? JD? Reunite on ice, so nice?

  13. I too love links and cannot resist the urge to link to things. I have some shame over it, as I will link CNN even though everyone knows it's just CNN.com. I just can't help myself. It's too much fun to click! CLICK! CLICKY CLICK!

    I'm fine. Really.

  14. If target is an exotic land, does that mean I can't go every weekend? Oh, sad.

  15. I still remember the first time I learned how to make a real, working link. Such a milestone.

As always, hilarity rules at SPM. :) And to quote my husband during our recent search for a dutch oven (no kidding), "I'LL give ya a dutch oven!!"

  16. I love links! Especially unexpected links, like prisoners.com. Genius!

  17. Ha ha! I thought you had written this in response to my own link heavy post today, but then I see that I evidentally copied you since my post was after yours!

Great minds think a link. GET IT??!

  18. Anonymous: I've boiled many a rabbit in my 6-quart Le Creuset. But see - this one is the smaller size, 3-1/2 qt, for those smaller rodents. Do you need my shipping address?

Jen: I am so not drunk! Who ever drinks and blogs, anyhow? *slurp*

Mary: 'Think a Link.' Isn't that another name for a peni- Oh, never mind.

  20. I remember how THRILLED I was when I learned how to link on my blog. Sigh. You, on the other hand, are a link abuser.

  21. i love to link - though i fear i'm kinda lazy about actually doing it...

inmate.com is a regular for me. i love to see if i've dated any of them...so, thanks to the criminal link. i'm sure i'll be browsing intently.

  22. Cute post. I love linking too. The only problem I have with reading posts with links is that I will get quickly sucked into the mommy blogger vortex. Like I'll go visit one mommy blog and then click on a link in someone's post to another mommy blog, and then on that blog I'll see a mommy leaving a comment so I click on her profile to check her blog out and on and on until pretty soon it's 11:30pm and I was headed to bed 2 hours ago!

But other than that, I like links!

  23. LOVED the links!

Very, very funny. And soooo creative!

  25. Hopefully blogger will let me comment today...

I am so totally busted on the links to old posts. I do that all the time. I really like what you linked to though, too freaking funny!

  26. it's like I always says, "drink and link, drink and link".

  27. Ha. I checked out the 'subversive' link and thought 'Wouldn't it be a hoot if I bought it for her?"

And then, I saw the price. I hope it really is the thought that counts because the thought is all I can afford at Williams-Sonoma.

  28. I see a gift from the Prisoners Arts and Crafts section in your future....

  29. I never thought of the subversive use of links. (Hey you readers, go to www.wendyboucher.blogspot.com and leave a comment.) But I think I'll give it a try!

  30. Dear Sweatpantsmom, Thanks for the great links, especially the one on how to make new friends... in Pennsylvania, no less. How can I make similar friends in California? Thanks!

  31. *snicker*

What I'd like to know is why you know the link to prisoners.com?

Hmmm... are you spending your writing time on other things besides your blog. Shameful!

BTW, I spit some of my coffee out through my nose at the Mod Squad thing. Thanks a lot, that hurt.

  32. Hilarious, as always! But what I really want to talk about is your new spring-y look. LOVE IT :)

  33. Dear Sweatpants Mom,

I am serving time in San Quentin, and I found your blog one night after a prison gang bang. You seem to have a soft spot for us incarcerated types, I wonder if you might be up for a rendezvous via the U.S. Postal Service?

    Love,
    Frank the Felon.

p.s. -- I myself am normally to lazy to link to stuff. Maybe I need to rethink this position, since links have such the potential to add hilarity to live.

  34. The opportunity to meet new friends in my own keystone state is far too enticing to pass up. I hear ex-cons make great babysitters...

  35. You really are creative. BTW, I like my links on a bun with mustard and relish.

  36. I think it is important to keep the B in the BLOG workin' Nice to find someone who shares this sensibility.

  37. Oooh, that was fun! You got me, too: I'm brand new to blogging, and even I am guilty of linking to old posts. Thanks for the laugh!
